Overview #

  • Type and unit — how the metric is aggregated and what it measures.
  • Volume — how many points have been reported in the window.
  • Reporting hosts — which machines send it.
  • Services — which services send it.

Tags #

The tag panel lists every tag on the metric with how many distinct values it has and the most common values. This is the fastest way to understand what dimensions a metric actually varies on.

A metric tagged with something high-cardinality — a request id, a user id — will produce a very large number of series. Check the tag list before you build a monitor on it.

Reporting interval #

The interval is measured from your data as the typical gap between consecutive points. It tells you how often to expect the metric to be reported, which is worth knowing before you write a monitor against it.

Metric summary #

The summary view lists many metrics at once with the last value each one reported, which is the quickest way to scan a service's metrics.

Metric volume #

The volume view shows how much data your metrics account for, and how it has changed. Use it to find the metrics contributing most to your ingest bill before you change what you send.

  • Volume per metric.
  • Volume per host and per service.
  • Tag cardinality for a selected metric.

The figures on this page are the ones your plan is measured against, so they reflect what has been accepted rather than what was sent.
